What is OSM IQ
Open Street Map (OSM) is a collection of geodata. Everyone can contribute and freely use this data.
Frequently Open Street Map is associated with a specific look of the map. Well known are Slippy Map and Open Cycle Map. But Open Street Map is more than one map /one rendering style. Open Street Map is a geographic database.
The data format is very open. There are only a few entities, which describe geometries or relations. There is no fixed model for classifying data.
All attributes are defined in tags, which store a key – value pair for a specific object.
This openness probably is one key factor for the success of Open Street Map. But the common rendering engines are not able to use all data, as they use only a limited subset of tags. Also providers of OSM geo data do a pre-selection of tags and offer only a subset of the data in common GIS formats.
OSM IQ should enable the user to make use the complete potential of OSM. With the application you can explore the data and make it usable specially for your needs. The user can select keys or values and export them to common GIS formats.
OSM IQ is not a tool for desktop mapping. There are no tools for spatial analysis.
It just has two functions Explore & Export.
Using OSM Explorer is divided in three phase:
- Loading of raw data
- Exploring the data
Loading of raw data:
The user can open OSM files from any source, get the data interactively via the map or open an existing OSM IQ project.
OSM files can contain a lot of data. If you try to load a complete Planet File, you will need some time.
With the search function the user can search for a specific location in the Nominatim database. Before downloading data you have to reduce the extend of the map. Otherwise the server will decline to provide the data.
Exploring the data:
After loading data the tag list will be filled. The order in the list corresponds with the occurrence of the tags. The user can display distribution of values with the statistic function or expand the list of values for a key.
Selection of Map Elements
With the drawing function you can display all points, lines or areas for a key or a value on the map.
Please note: OSM IQ is no full-blown GIS. There is no concept of scale dependent visibilities and no spatial index. That fore displaying a lot of data will decrease performance significant.
Elements that are displayed on the map can be selected and all attributes and relations will be shown in the element properties section.
Search within OSM data:
If data is already loaded, the search function will also look for results in the tags (keys and values) and not only display Nominatim results. The usage of wildcards (*) is supported. The results are shown as a filtered tag list, with all functionality that you got in the standard list.
From the tag list you can export all objects with a specific key to KML. In order to export elements to the ESRI Shape format, the objects have to be send to the feature list before. The user can select attributes (keys) which are shown in the table. This columns are also exported to shape.
OSM IQ is still in an experimental phase, but can already be downloaded and used.
If OSM IQ starts in German language and you prefer English, open the application menu (top left), go to “Optionen” and change “Sprache” to English. A message will pop up, that tells you that this change will be effective after restart of the application.
